Nail clipping is a five-minute job that most salons make you book two weeks ahead for. We do not. Walk in during opening hours, and unless we are mid-groom with a dog who cannot be left, we will do it there and then.
Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Saturday, 9am to 1pm. at 32 High Street, so you are not circling for a space with a dog in the car.
If you arrive at a genuinely awkward moment we will ask you to wait a few minutes or pop back — but you will not be turned away and told to book.
Why overgrown nails are a real problem
If you can hear your dog clicking across a hard floor, the nails are already too long. That is the simplest test there is.
Overgrown nails do not just look untidy. They change how a dog stands, because the nail hitting the floor first pushes the toe backwards and shifts weight off the pad. Over months that altered posture puts strain through the toes, the wrist and eventually the shoulders and hips. In older dogs, and dogs already managing arthritis, it makes a noticeable difference to comfort and confidence on smooth floors.
Left long enough, a nail can curl round and grow into the pad, which is painful and needs a vet. Dew claws are the usual culprit because they never touch the ground and never wear down.
How often, and what about the quick
Every four to eight weeks for most dogs. Dogs walked mainly on pavement wear their nails down naturally and need less. Dogs walked on grass, in fields or along the Witham banks need more.
Every nail contains a quick — the blood vessel and nerve running down the middle. On a nail that has been long for a while, the quick grows out with it, which limits how short it can safely be cut in one go. The answer is little and often: each trim lets the quick recede slightly, so over a few visits you get back to a proper length without ever cutting into it.
That is precisely why a walk-in service is useful. Short, frequent trims are better for your dog than one dramatic cut every six months.
