Pine woods, sandy soil and wet coats

Dogs walked in the Woodhall pinewoods, around Ostler's Plantation or along the Witham come home with a very particular combination — pine needles caught in the coat, sandy grit worked down to the skin, and in autumn a great deal of water held in a dense undercoat.

Wet coat that is not dried properly to the skin mats within days. That is why a dog who seemed fine on Sunday can be felted by Wednesday, and it is the single most common reason owners are surprised by matting.

My dog gets soaked on every walk. Does that cause matting?

It is one of the main causes. A dense coat that is wet and not dried right down to the skin will mat within days, and towel-drying does not get anywhere near deep enough. Blast-drying to the skin at each groom is a large part of why a professional groom lasts as long as it does.
