Ears are the priority

A Cocker's ears are long, heavy and densely furnished, and they hang flat against the head. Airflow to the canal is poor, moisture gets trapped, and this breed has one of the highest rates of ear problems of any we see.

Every full groom includes cleaning the ears and thinning the hair around the opening so air can move. If your Cocker swims, works in cover, or walks the Witham banks regularly, this matters more, not less.

If we find heat, smell, discharge or unusual sensitivity, we will stop and tell you to see your vet. Grooming is not treatment, but a groomer who sees your dog every six weeks is often the first to notice.

Working and show coats are not the same job

Show-line Cockers carry considerably more coat, with heavy feathering on the legs, chest and belly. Working Cockers are lighter and tighter, though they still feather and still knot.

A working Cocker that spends time in fields and water picks up burrs, seeds and mud that felt into the feathering. Grass seeds between the toes and inside the ears are a genuine veterinary risk in summer, and are something we check for as a matter of course.

How often should a Cocker Spaniel be groomed?

Every six to eight weeks for most, and closer to six for a show-line coat or a dog who works and swims.

Between visits, comb the ear feathering, the leg and belly feathering and behind the elbows. Check between the toes after every walk through long grass in summer.
