A coat that mats from the inside out
The Bichon has a soft, dense undercoat beneath a coarser curly outer coat. Shed hair does not fall away — it is held in the curl, exactly as it is in a Poodle.
What makes Bichons particularly deceptive is that the coat springs back. It can look full and healthy while the layer against the skin is already felted, and a slicker brush will glide across the top without ever reaching the problem.
The test is a metal comb. If it will not pass cleanly from the skin outwards, there is matting the brush is skating over.
Tear staining and the white coat
Tear staining is common and largely down to moisture sitting in the fur below the eye rather than anything wrong with the dog. Keeping that hair short and the area clean and dry is the practical answer.
A white coat also shows everything — grass, mud, and the rust colour that develops where fur stays damp. Regular bathing and thorough drying to the skin does far more for a Bichon coat than any product.
How often should a Bichon be groomed?
Every four to six weeks. Bichons are at the demanding end of the scale and there is no honest way around it — the coat grows continuously and traps everything it sheds.
Comb properly at home two or three times a week, down to the skin, particularly behind the ears, under the arms and around the rear.
